Mountain Biking

All of the Adventure Learning Program’s weekly activities, enables participants the opportunity to step outside of their comfort zone to conquer fears, build confidence, self-esteem and self-reliance, all while developing social connections.

 

 

The Adventure Learning Program takes teens on multiple rides a week through Houston’s bayou pathways and mountain bike trails. The quick thinking and skills needed to ride a trail helps teens learn the difference between inexperience and failing. Mountain biking exposes participants to a fun and exciting way to receive the many health benefits of regular fitness and cardiovascular exercise.

Mountain Biking gives participants the opportunity to enjoy the vast outdoors parks in Houston more than any other weekly activity the Adventure Learning Program provides. It’s because mountain biking allows you to quickly get off the beaten path and enjoy the solitude and majesty of nature even in a busy urban environment. It is said that spending time outdoors decreases stress, anxiety, and overwhelm of daily life stimuli especially when shared with peers.

Mountain Biking is also know for being a low-impact sport because of the non-weight bearing elements which puts less stress on the joints. Although, Mountain Biking is still considered a full body cardiovascular workout by using the large muscle groups which increases blood flow and oxygen to the brain. This allows for brain receptors to be regenerate and fire more effectively, sharpening participants brain functioning.

The vigorous demands of mountain biking stimulate participants body’s to release natural endorphins, which are the body’s way of feeling good and getting more energy. The cardiovascular component also boosts serotonin, an important neurotransmitter in the brain which helps to prevent depression and anxiety.

Participants who mountain bike with the Adventure Learning Program not only gaining new skills and improve mountain biking abilities but they have also built confidence and self-esteem. The focus and attention needed to ride a challenging single-track can become a form of moving meditation; ultimately helping to relax and weather life’s stressors by acting as a distraction from negative thoughts that may contribute to participants anxiety and depression.

The Adventure Learning Program owns a fleet of mountain bikes and helmets that they service in-house or through their sponsor, Planetary Cycles. The Adventure Learning Program also offers outdoor excursions and overnight mountain biking trips.

Participants are required to bring clothing that are easily moveable in, closed toed shoes, and a refillable water bottle.
